Aranda Primary School

The following are a sample of the enrichment programs offered at Aranda Primary.

Instrumental Music Program (IMP)
Aranda Primary has two bands - a Year 5 and a Year 6 band. These groups are part of the ACT Instrumental Music Program. Students in Year 5 are assessed as to their suitability for participation in the program at the beginning of the school year. No previous instrumental experience is required. The twenty-two students invited to join the band will have demonstrated co-operative team skills. A commitment to home practice is essential. Students continue in the band for two years. Costs are associated with participation in this program.

NSW University Competitions
The school annually enters a range of these competitions which are for students in Years 3-6. The competitions offer extension experiences in English, Mathematics, Writing, Science, and Computing. There is a cost for these competitions. NSW Mathematics Olympics is also available for selected students.

Choir
Students have the opportunity to extend their musical skills through singing and breathing instruction in a School Choir. The choir meets once a week and performs at special occasions.

Public Speaking
All Year 5 and 6 students participate in the ACT Public Speaking Competition organised by Rostrum each year. One student is selected to represent the school.

Tournament of the Minds - TOMS
The Tournament of Minds is a problem solving competition in Language, Mathematics/Engineering and Humanities for students in Year 5 and Year 6. It is an extension program that requires commitment and co-operative learning skills. The competition requires six weeks of preparation and a weekend for the presentation. Successful teams may progress to State Finals.

Mathematics Enrichment
This program targets students who have been identified with strengths and interests in high level mathematical problem solving. It also provides opportunities for these students to enter challenging external Maths competitions. While students participate in the Mathematics Enrichment Program all other students in the class receive problem solving instruction in a smaller group by the class teacher.

Guest Speakers and Visiting Performances
Expertise from a variety of performers, authors and guest speakers is highly valued at Aranda Primary School. Students have opportunities to participate in a wide range of stimulating programs that are incorporated into ongoing classroom programs.

Dance
Aranda provides a rich program in Dance for all students. Students do one semester of dance each year. A dance educator works with the class teacher and students on a physically demanding program which combines dance and music and links to other areas of the curriculum.

Drumming
Developed as an alternative program for Year 5 and 6 students not in the IMP. Students have a program of music instruction using drum kits.
