Absences
Class rolls are kept in accordance with Departmental Policy. An explanation is required whenever a student has been absent. Parents will receive an absence SMS if no explanation is provided by 9:30am, parents can respond directly to this text to update their child's attendance. If a child is likely to be absent from school for a prolonged period please contact the teacher who may suggest activities for the child to complete during the absence. Unexplained absences will be followed up by the school with a letter or phone call to the family. Parents/Carers must notify the Front Office when taking children in or out of the school during school hours so that it may be recorded electronically on rolls. If children are late to school they must be signed in at the office by their parents.
After School Care
YWCA Canberra provides children with the opportunities to learn and develop a range of skills and interests in a supportive and caring environment. Our weekly programs provide children with engagement in activities to enhance their skills in a range of areas such as: cognitive development, creative play, imaginative thought process, physical development, gross and fine motor skills, social development, movement, mathematics, literacy and hand-eye coordination.
The program runs throughout the school term, before school care: 7:30 – 9:00am. After school care: 3:00 – 6:00pm. Through the school holidays, the program runs 7:30am – 6:00pm. For information on Enrolling, please refer to our After School Care section on the website.
Appointments
Communication between school and home is highly valued. Parents are asked to make an appointment for any discussion with the Principal, Deputy Principal, Counsellor or teachers. An appointment will be arranged at the earliest possible time and attention will be given immediately to urgent issues.
Arrival at School
Please ensure children arrive at school in time to commence lessons at 9:00 am. A late arrival is very disruptive and often your child will miss important announcements. Children should not arrive before 8:40 am as there is no staff supervision.
Assembly
Assemblies are planned and occur in a cycle of junior, senior and whole school assemblies. All assemblies occur on a Friday ( within the three week rotational timetable) and commence at 9.15am. These assemblies feature singing, drama, reports from students, displays of work, awards and general announcements. Whole-school gatherings create a cohesive school community and maintain a heightened school spirit. Parents are welcome to attend.
